The Beatles' second
movie, released in
1965. This one was in
color, unlike the previous one,
A Hard Day's Night. Much sillier and less realistic than the first one, it revolves around an
Asian fan sending
Ringo a ring that is worn by the victims of a
human-sacrificing religious sect. (Not
that much of a fan, or really
naive, maybe.) The Beatles are chased through
England,
Switzerland, and
the Bahamas by cult members and some
scientists who want the ring.
The movie was filmed in several locations as a tax shelter, and the Beatles spent most of the time they weren't on camera in their trailers smoking marijuana. The soundtrack album was interesting, though, because their earlier introduction to Bob Dylan had not only turned them on to drugs but to more acoustic-sounding music and this was the first album featuring the sound change.
The movie soundtrack contains (in the British vinyl release and all regions' CD versions):
- Help!
- The Night Before
- You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
- I Need You
- Another Girl
- You're Going To Lose That Girl
- Ticket to Ride
- Act Naturally
- It's Only Love
- You Like Me Too Much
- Tell Me What You See
- I've Just Seen A Face
- Yesterday
- Dizzy Miss Lizzy
The
American vinyl release only contained tracks 1-7, with untitled
instrumentals (including some really trippy
sitar versions of earlier Beatles songs) making up the rest of the album. Hearing the Indian musicians who played in this movie was what got
George Harrison into Indian music by the time future albums were written/recorded. The remaining songs were shuffled onto later releases such as "
Rubber Soul" and "
Yesterday and Today."
