This term was coined by Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins in a 1984 press release promoting Dan Bunten's educational game Seven Cities of Gold. As the below soft-links show, the term has gradually dipped lower than its initial usage describing products that both educate as they entertain (tricking people into learning things while they're having fun!) and instead is usually applied to products that foolishly attempt both entertainment and education and fail miserably at both.
