Unions tend to give workers a stronger voice in labor negotiations because they can threaten a job action such as a slowdown, a sick-out or a full strike if they are not being taken seriously.

Unions also tend to require workers to give them part of their pay, and this is a sore point with some workers who don't really want to unionize.
