Brand name for a
fertilizer produced by the
Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, the name is short for
Milwaukee Organic Nitrogen. Sold commercially since
1926, it was developed as a way to
dispose of
biosolids extracted during the
sewage treatment process of Milwaukee's then new municipal sewage system.
A slow release, non-burning fertilizer containing roughly 83% water insoluble nitrogen, Milorganite represented a major breakthrough when it was introduced, and is still widely used today.
