In
chemistry, any
reaction in which
electrons are transferred. Originally referred to the
chemical combination of
oxygen atoms with the atoms of other
elements. Oxidation always
occurs
simultaneously with
reduction (
redox reactions). The
substance which gains electrons is called the
oxidizing agent.
Commonly seen examples of oxidation include fire or burning, and rusting.
