The independent
record label run from 1990 to 1998 by Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson (both of
Tsunami).
Releases on Simple Machines were always recognisable for their attention to detail with regards to packaging and presentation. 7" singles, for example, would be released in matchbook-style packaging, in the style of a diner menu, or as a box with various ice-cream coloured vinyl singles inside.
Simple Machines also constructed and distributed a guide to putting out one's own records.
Notable Simple Machines bands include Tsunami, Ida, Scrawl, Grenadine, Franklin Bruno (of Nothing Painted Blue) and Monorchid. They also once released a tape of early solo recordings by a little-known drummer by the name of Dave Grohl, under the alias Late!.
