In computer terms, a language may be placed within another document, such as PHP scripts within HTML web pages. It may also be a single purpose computer and application placed in a object, such as a stereo or television.

More recently, this term has been used by the Western media to describe journalists who have been assigned to join a group of soldiers and follow them through a war.

Usage of the term embedded has been popularized during the Gulf War II, where journalists equipped with Video Phones report back on how the war is progressing from inside a unit of soldiers.
