A
bridge bidding convention. After a 1NT
opening bid and certain 1NT
overcalls, Stayman is an
articifial response of 2C, usually implying
4 cards in each
major suit, though in some situations it can be used with
only one 4-card major. Stayman asks opening bidder to bid either 2H or 2S
if he has a 4-card major suit, in order to find a
4-4 fit. Opener responds
with an
artificial negative bid of 2D if he has no 4-card major suit.
