According to the critic William S. Peterson, Ailie was the title of a novella written by Mrs. Humphry Ward, (nee Mary Augusta Arnold) in 1869. In Victorian Heretic: Mrs. Humphrey Ward's Robert Elsmere, Peterson describes the manuscript as an item of juvenilia that strongly resembles Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Marble Faun.
