American filmdirector of classix, mainly of the hard-boiled, people-driven
variety. Most of my faves have "New York" written all over them: Dog Day
Afternoon, with Al Pacino trying to fix his life via a bank robbery;
Bye Bye Braverman: four menschen and a funeral; The
Pawnbroker, remembrance of atrocities past; Daniel, from E.L. Doctorow's Rosenberg-case novel. Also did The Wiz - no Oscar for that one, IIRC. We'll remember Network instead.
