In this era of
statistics for everything in baseball the folks at
sabre-(stats people)- have come up with the
hold- a statistic that measures the number of times a
setup man leaves a game with the lead, divided by the number of times a pitcher comes into the game with the lead.
The higher the number, the better obviously.
Each successful instance is described as a "hold"- and pitchers are then ranked accordingly. Sort of a "watered down" equivalent of the Save.
