In chess, the square on the 8th rank that a pawn land on, allowing it to become another piece, usually a queen. The particular square the pawn lands on can be very important. For example, consider the position where white has a king on the h-file, and a pawn on the square a7, with black having a king on the h-file, and a bishop that is not currently attacking a7. If it is black's turn to move, and the bishop on 36, then she can move it to attack the queening square, a8, and the game is drawn. On the other hand if the pawn was on b7, the bishop would be on the wrong color to stop it.
