A cut gem with a rounded top and a flat, convex or concave bottom, rather than having facets. Cabochons are a common shape for opaque stones like agate and for "star stones" with asterism.

Ca`bo`chon" (ka`bo`shôN"), n. [F.] (Jewelry)

A stone of convex form, highly polished, but not faceted; also, the style of cutting itself. Such stones are said to be cut en cabochon.
