A coffee brew-pipe for the weird and adventurous coffee geek.
"Two friends. One vision for awesome coffee that accompanies awesome adventures. Tim Panek and Craig Hall have been best buds for 18 years and invented an ultra-light, ultra-portable way for coffee to be enjoyed outdoors. That passion created the Bripe™ Coffee Brew Pipe™"
—Briping
This item of coffee equipment is how I imagine Legolas and his kin from Mirkwood make coffee whilst out elfing. i's designed to be light, portable and to make coffee pretty much anywhere. Of all the coffee brewing methods i have written about, it's the least mainstream (in fact I don't think it even got a mention in that writeup), hence only probably wielded by weird coffee people when in the Great Outdoors. It's really a tiny-scale cowboy coffee setup that can be carried in your cargo pockets.
Constructed largely of copper, it looks like a large metal smoking pipe, hence the name. the 'bowl' is filled with ground coffee and a little water, all heated by a butane torch lighter while the user holds the stem by a cork insulation sleeve. Once the coffee is brewed, simply sucking on the stem allows one to drink. It looks hot and dangerous, and whilst it's not going to brew the best coffee you'll ever have, that's really not the point. The point is that you have coffee whilst hiking or otherwise engaged in outdoor pursuits, and have fun doing it. Hoffmann calls it a "capable brewer" and that's enough for me. There's an internal metal filter that strains out the grounds before you suck down your coffee, and the Bripe comes with a torch lighter and thermometer/stirrer. The concept was dreamed up by two friends with a common interest in hiking and coffee, following a trip to Cost Rica. Tim Panek created the design, prototyped it and Craig made sure to get patents out on the design. Indiegogo raised enough money for them to begin manufacturing in 2016, and the rest is history. Some of the profits are being used to benefit the Quitirrisi tribe, local coffee and cocoa growers and their families through other charitable organisations.
elf needs coffee badly.
