Akkala Sámi is part of the
Finno-Ugrian family of languages. It is classified as nearly
extinct. Only 8 people can speak this language today. Most of the people who used to speak Akkala
Sámi now speak the more popular
Kildin Sámi or
Russian. The language is now spoken in the
Murmansk Province and
Lovozero areas of
Russia. The two leading scholars in the language are
Leif Rantala and
Pekka Sammallahti.
