A derogatory term, as used by fans of Interactive Fiction (IF), for conventional non-interactive fiction - particularly text-based, though the term could equally apply to filmed or spoken word fiction. Static fiction can easily be seen as a subset of interactive fiction - indeed as a highly disabled version of it where interaction consists of no more than turning a page now and then. In fact you can easily port static fiction into IF just by printing a blocks of text with instructions to Press Any Key in between (which actually is exactly what one piece submitted to the IFComp a while back consisted of). All this just emphasises what makes IF a positively new art form - interactivity, a still largely unexplored means of doing all the things that fiction can do.
