The sequence of amino acids that a piece of DNA codes for is determined by the order of the bases along it. However, there is some redundancy. It takes three bases to code for a single amino acid. Much of the time, though, only the first two are important - whatever the third is, the amino acid gained will be the same. These bases are referred to as silent sites, as point mutations here will not affect the protein produced by the gene.
