All older Atari 2600 literature refers to the fire button on the Atari Joystick as the "red button". They were very consistant in this. Why? I don't know. But they apparently even tried to trademark the phrase. (To keep their competition from using such a juicy phrase).

This also applied to the button on the paddle controllers.
