Neither
punk, nor
new wave, these unrelated (and usually un
commercial) bands used the market space opened up by punk's notoriety to get signed by
indie labels, and occasionally by majors.
Cabaret Voltaire, Magazine,
Gang of Four,
The Pop Group,
Bauhaus,
XTC... Some of the bands, and various individuals, are still at it:
Barry Adamson,
Sara Lee,
Neneh Cherry, for instance; some have even become music-industry
suits, though they now could use a hit from the
clue bong.
