  1. is not SQL-based, and is therefore pointy haired boss-proof
  2. modern OODBMS and ORDBMS systems provide easier access to the data, sometimes even in a SQL-like syntax
  3. used as a serialization target for objects
  4. fancy name for a one-off, oh, I'm sorry application-specific database
