Mêlée

Combat involving close-range weapons, i.e. swords, baseball bats, or fists. In RPG terms, a melee weapon indicates any weapon that is not designated as a missile weapon.

Melee is sometimes used generally to mean any kind of fight or battle.

A fight in which the combatants are mingled in one confused mass; a hand to hand conflict; an affray.

Me`lée" (?), n.

A cavalry exercise in which two groups of riders try to cut paper plumes off the helmets of their opponents, the contest continuing until no member of one group retains his plume; -- sometimes called Balaklava melée.
