little letters, like these ones. so called because typographers kept their lead type in wooden drawers. Sometimes you'll see the drawers in antique markets - they're around 2x3 feet square, shallow, with lots of little compartments for the different letters.

anyway, the little letters were kept in a drawer below the CAPITAL LETTERS, hence lower case and UPPER CASE.
