When applied to a novel the term 'gripping' describes the way in which the narrative draws in and then holds onto the reader. When you can't put the book down because you are compelled to discover where the unfolding plot will take you next you might as well be in the author's grip.

You may also see the term used to describe films, plays, video games or other forms of story telling.
