A tool used for starting a fire. A taut string, affixed to the ends of a stick, bends the stick in the shape of a bow. A second stick (the drill), preferably very straight and round, is looped into the string at a perpendicular. One end of the drill is held against a piece of wood. Now, by rapidly moving the bow back and forth with a sawing motion, the drill tip generates lots of friction, eventually enough to start the wood smoldering and catch fire to straw and kindling. This tool is well-demonstrated in the movie Quest for Fire.
