Tokonoma is an
alcove in a traditional Japanese room called
washitsu. It is the size of one-third or half a
tatami mat, with somewhat raised floor board made of wood or
tatami. It serves as a
display space of art objects such as
earthenware, hanging
scrolls, flower arrangements (
ikebana).
Tokonoma plays an important roll in
Japanese tea ceremonies in that people would appreciate the beauty of art objects there.
