TV is
stupid on purpose for the express means of
selling things. When exposed to incessant,
flicking stupidity, people begin to absorb stupidity in a way best described as
mental osmosis. Since you can sell
just about anything to
someone who doesn't think, then it's in the interest of
television producers to encourage stupidity, for, as most people who've seen
commercials know, the
TV shows are brought to you (i.e. funded) by
people who want to sell you stuff.
It would seem that the wit usually absent from the 22 minutes or so of
programming (and the word
programming doesn't just refer to the
schedule) has been poured into the
commercials that take up the rest of the time. A hell of a lot more thought goes into how to sell a candy bar than what the people drinking
coffee on the comfy couch are going to say next week on
Friends.
Guard your
brain well.
