Osgood-Schlatter disease is not a disease at all. It is a
condition. Remember that!
Usually occurs in
boys ages
10 - 14.
Usually characterized by
pain and
swelling below the knee cap where the
patellar tendon attaches to the
shin bone. The
quadriceps muscle on the front of the thigh continually pulls on that
tendon causing the condition.
The
condition usually lasts
six months to a
year but usually goes away with treatment.
Stretching your knees is a very good treatment.
Stretch consistently, every day, but do not "over-stretch"
If you are suffering from the symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter disease, do not
run,
jump, or
squat or atleast keep it to a
minimum.
Other good treatments are
ice on the
affected area and
anti-inflammatory painkillers such as
Ibuprofen.
If the pain is very
severe your doctor might recommend
taping or a
knee immobilizer.
I had this personally. I had
swelling in the
front of my knee as a result of the condition and
cyst in the
back of my knee so I had to have it
immobilized and the condition didn't
leave me for a
few years.
