Biography of an astounding writer

Born Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, became wide known as Machado de Assis. He was a very good brazilian writ...nah, nah: he was THE greatest Brazilian writer. Machado de Assis was a writer from the realistic movement(see realism)(actually, this man was the pioneer of realism in Brazil), which I particularly like a lot. He came with his outstanding books after an extremely romantic period of the literature, improving Brazilian culture in a way never seen before.

Joaquim Maria came to life at Morro do Livramento, Rio de Janeiro. Grandson of freed slaves, his father was a painter and his mother work was to wash clothes. His family was very poor and Machado was made orphan very early. He didn't go to school for too much but for our luck and the good of universal literature was admitted as a typographist assistant at the "Marmota Fluminense" newspaper. Soon he became a journalist and the rest is littera history...

Machado's books were indeed famous by their stories however the thing which attracted and continues to attract people is the criticism and irony contained in the side commentaries of the writing. His literature isn't superb fantasy like, lets's say, J.R.R. Tolkien. Anyway, the characteristic of Assis works was to depict the society of his time. And let me tell you something, in a general way, what was a problem in the 19th century is still problem today. Also, Machado de Assis studied the human soul, the human ego, therefore his books contain a lot of psychological notes.

Assis most famous books are:

Romantic

  • Helena;
  • Iaiá Garcia.

    Realistic

  • Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas;
  • Dom Casmurro;
  • Quincas Borba;
  • Memorial de Aires.

    He also used to write very good short tales and curiously was epileptic. Oh yeah, he was mulatto and I expect you not to have that kind of silly prejudice.
