In some ballroom dance styles, couples move around the room. In order to prevent utter chaos the convention is to follow Line of Dance, which simply means to circle the dance floor in a counter-clockwise manner, just as you would when ice skating. It's actually more of a ring, please do not imagine a line of scrimmage.
