Meera Syal's second novel is a frank, comedic look at the life of young Punjabi-British women in London: the marriages, love affairs, careers and families tangle in a difficult cultural and political balance. Syal's writing is very natural and light, but doesn't run away from incendiary subjects. She steps along that tricky line of laughing at your own family, when you'd smack anyone else who did that.
Syal is best known for her roles in the BBC comedy series Goodness Gracious Me and her script for the film Bhaji on the Beach.
First published in the UK in 2000.
