Character in The World According To Garp by John Irving. Ellen James is a young girl who was raped and in order to silence her, the rapist cut out her tongue.
Accordingly, an order of frankly insane extreme feminists is formed made up of women who cut out their own tongues to "show solidarity".
Ellen herself is appalled and terrified of the Ellen Jamesians as they call themselves. She eventually falls in with Garp who has known several Ellen Jamesians and initially believes that she is one of them.
Fortunately, from Ellen's point of view the story improves from thereon.
