Demonym

A demonym (sometimes referred to as a gentilic) is place-based label that describes a resident of a particular city, territory, country, or region. This Greek word roughly translates to "name of a people or populace". The word was first used to specifically describe an Athenian citizen based on the "deme" in which he lived.

The origin of this word comes from:

• the Greek root "demos" or "deme" meaning populous, people, or township; and
• the Greek suffix "onym" meaning "name"

• a person from the continent of Africa is an African
• a person from country of Japan is Japanese
• a person from the state (technically commonwealth) of Pennsylvania is a Pennsylvanian
• a person from the city of Pittsburgh is a Pittsburgher

It should be noted that demonyms are not the same as ethnicity or religion. Ethnic and religious groups can, and do, cross geographic and political boundaries, while demonyms simply put a name on a person from a particular place. Many terms such as "Japanese American" or "Tibetan Buddhism" tend to blur these lines.
