The worst ending of that classic RPG, Chrono Trigger, having the unhappy mark of a certain finality. Obtained by dying during a battle you were supposed to win (as opposed to a battle you were intended to fail...?).

The year is 1999 AD. Truce Dome comes under attack by an unknown lifeform, spreading fiery death from the skies.

After running away from Guardia Castle's guards (who think Crono kidnapped Princess Marle), the gang (Crono, Marle, and their tech-genius Lucca) stumbles upon a Gate leading to an unknown time. Having no other choice, Lucca activates her Gate Key, and they pass through, shocking the pants off of the Chancellor.

Despite all attempts to defend against the thermonuclear spikes, Pierre Dome falls, followed closely by Proto Dome. Truce Dome takes a direct hit, and the power flickers offline. Clouds of ash block the sun, and fires scar the earth.

They find themselves in the wasteland of the future, a ruined, withered place where the only heat comes from the fires of Lavos as it spawns beneath the surface. After discovering the fate left in store for the future, they swear to stop Lavos and save the future.

Later that year...

Crono & Marle: Icesword!

> Son of the Sun takes 512 damage

Son of the Sun: Solar Flare!

> Crono dies; Marle dies; Lucca dies;

But they failed, and the future refused to change. A not-so gentle reminder to the player that the battle they are fighting in the past, present, and future is bigger than the continuum of time itself, and that one wrong move 14,000 years in the past can bring about apocalypse. The evil space-parasite Lavos (you think I make this shit up?) cannot be allowed to feed on the hopes and dreams of all mankind for the sole purpose of simply reproducing more parasites. So restart from your last save, and try not to get killed this time. The fate of the world obviously depends on prepubescent kids with magical powers.

This ending is about guaranteed to bring tears to the eyes of any ten-year-old who still hasn't quite mastered dealing with the consequences of their actions.

Damn, has it been that long? I feel old.
