Ακαλανθις

One of the nine daughters of Pierus, king of Macedonia. With her sisters she challenged the Muses to match her at singing, and in indignation the goddesses changed all nine girls into birds. Acalanthis became a goldfinch (which in Greek means a thorn). (See Pierides).
