Super Bowl II|Super Bowl IV
January 12, 1969
The AFL, behind cocksure New York Jets QB Joe Namath, won their first Super Bowl with this contest. Namath had bravely boasted that the Jets would top the Baltimore Colts on the Thursday before the game, then proceeded to fulfill his prophecy as his team won pretty handily over a Baltimore team that had only lost one game during the regular season. However, legendary Colts QB Johnny Unitas, who sat most of the season out with a bruised elbow, came off the bench to score the Colts only touchdown in the 4th quarter.
Namath was named the MVP for the game. Attendance was 75,389. Weeb Ewbank was the head coach for the Jets, and Don Shula for the Colts.
