computer games. It usually involves trying to complete a track within a specified amount of time, or trying to go for as long as possible without time running out, which is replenished by
checkpoints throughout the
track.
Mario Kart 64 started a trend in which
players could record their best times, and then race against a "
ghost", which followed the exact path the player followed the previous time. This way the player knew that if
he/she was beating the ghost, then they were also setting a new
record.
