An
organization established by
Martin Luther King, Jr. and
Ralph Abernathy to assist and
organize civil rights groups.
The goal of the SCLC was to promote the liberation of African-Americans by hosting voter registration drives and training people to lead other civil rights groups. Their most famous action was the March On Washington that brought thousands of African-Americans into Washington DC to demonstrate for the cause of civil rights. SCLC also organized other large scale protests before reducing it's scope after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.. After the loss of King the SCLC confined the bulk of it's activities to the Southern states.
