Fate
Was torpedoed on the 18th of December 1944 by the U-486 in the English Channel en route between Hull and Falmouth as part of convoy BTC-10. She currently lies 7.5 miles south-east of Dodman Point in 71 metres of water. The Silverlaurel was the first ship sunk by the U-486.
The reason behind this node is a moment of time-capsule retrieval (well, sort of) from my local Oxfam. I was leafing through a book on Windsor Castle when a sheet of WW2 naval radio message paper fell out. On the reverse of this was an amateur watercolour of the Silverlaurel, dated 1942. The picture is unsigned, except for a small 'W' in the bottom right corner. It was framed at one point - the paper has folds in it around the picture. And a bit of googling found the above information.
