The great house and grounds owned by
Mr Darcy in
Pride and Prejudice, said to be based on the real house of
Chatsworth in
Derbyshire, the home of the Dukes of
Devonshire (which it still is to this day). Cunningly
Jane Austen also mentions Chatsworth as such, i.e. under its own name, in the properties visited by
Elizabeth Bennet and the
Gardiners in Derbyshire, in addition to Pemberley.
It is here, where she witnesses the enormous respect that the servants of the house have for Mr Darcy, that she begins to realise there is a lot more of good in him than she had suspected.
Now used in the name (as "Republic of Pemberley", egad!) of the main Jane Austen fan Web site.
