She walks to the beach,
takes off her shoes so her feet can get
salty wet
walks on the dark edge of the shore

At dusk she waits for the tide to go out
the stars to come up and
the lights on the boardwalk to
twinkle in the distance

She hands me a seashell and puts it to my ear
the song I hear is not as beautiful as her voice
of course,
but I pretend, because it makes her smile.
