Dirty is the official internet community for Underworld fans in all but name. Its website has been standing in one form or another for five years. The name comes from the Underworld song dirty epic.
Dirty began as a mailing list, created for the Underworld fans in alt.music.underworld who were tired of the growing menace posed by spam. Dirty.org followed the dirtylist in 1995, when the Mmm..Underworld I Love You site became stagnant. Other sites have come and gone or stayed, but dirty.org is the only one designed primarily as a communication center for fans of the group.
The dirtylist started to gain attention after a few years. Darren Emerson, former member of Underworld, would post messages from time to time. People from Tomato would post as well. Karl Hyde would answer questions from time to time.
The advent of free streaming audio brought dirtyradio. Dirtyradio began as dirtylister DJs taking advantage of cable modems and RealAudio Server's free (at the time) licensing. Eventually, Underworld Networking Systems set up a centralized ShoutCast server to stream shuffled playlists constantly, except for the daily live streams from said DJ's. dirtyradio has bounced among a few different providers. More recently, dirtyradio has been the venue for exclusive broadcasts from Underworld themselves, Darren Emerson, and Darren Price.
DirtyChat has been bouncing from channel to channel all across IRC. It began as #rez on EFNet, which was taken over by a warez group. The chat regulars then moved to #spikee on the same network, then to #spikee on DALnet, then to #dirtyorg on irc.underworld.net, and THEN to #dirtyorg on irc.dirty.org. Many bulletin board users don't get IRC anyway, and use the Java IRC client on dirty.org.
Dirty.org now hosts the Underworld bulletin boards as a de facto replacement for the dirtylist. As of now, the list receives no mention on dirty.org. This is kind of a shame in my eyes.
