According to Socrates, the unexamined life is not worth living.

To Socrates, questioning why one lives their life the way they do was of utmost importance. It was important to be responsible (i.e. to be able to respond well when asked why) for your way of life. Questioning was an integral part of Socrates' theory of Care of the Soul, and it exemplified Plato's definition of arete.
