In fiction, particularly science fiction or spy thrillers, a weapon of heretofore unseen power that has either been invented or stolen by the bad guys, and the firing of which must be prevented by the hero -- usually at the last possible second. Superweapons often do things like cause massive tidal waves or earthquakes, or vaporize entire cities.
