Usual food that a particular population eats, normally in great enough quanity that if it is taken away there is disaster. Witness the Irish population, their staple diet of potatoes (how little some things change), and the potato blight of 1845-47. A fungus destroys the plants, the population starves in teh Irish Potato Famine.
