Chinese tradition, people
fated to be
lovers are connected by an
invisible red silk thread. This
concept also occurs in
Japan--I've seen it in at least one
dating sim. Maybe certain pairs of
friends are connected this way too, but I don't think that's a
canonical usage. Just my own
speculation.
