Data (say, your Mastercard number or top secret government documents) is encrypted with a password or key. This same password can be used to decrypt the data. This means that if you use private key cryptography to send a message to a friend, you need to the password to him in a safe way.

See also public key cryptography, which solves the problem of how to get the key to your friend.
