Potential difference

The electric potential difference (the difference in potential) measured in volts, is the work done per unit charge as a charge is moved between two points in an electric field.

An electric potential difference must exist for current to flow in an electric circuit.

A voltmeter is used to measure the electric potential difference between two points in an electric circuit. It is connected in parallel across a load in the circuit. It has a very high resistance (ideally infinite).
