The
meat from the
belly of a
pig is
cured to become
bacon. The phrase "pork bellies," however, is most often heard of in the context of trading
futures contracts, where
investors are trading contracts to make or accept
delivery of pork bellies on a given date at a
prearranged price. Investors don't actually want the pork bellies out of a love for bacon, but because they believe they can turn a
profit selling the contracts.
