Coined circa 1721 and pronounced noh'tuh ben'nee. Latin not bene, note well. An imperative of notare, to note + bene, well.
To take careful note of, note well or observe. Usually abbreviated as N.B. and used to call attention to something the writer considers important;as,
Nota Bene: Appointment of this judge will have a lasting effect.

It's more often than not used to bring to light something that is significant but does not fit well into the framework of a commentary.
