A situation where someone who, because of personal choosing or unfortunate circumstances, does not settle well with many of their peers. They may not be necessarily disliked by their peers, but they do not have many friendships with those peers nor do they, in some circumstances, want friendships. Those who do not fit in generally neglect to "go along with the crowd." Cases of one not fitting in usually occur in a school environment. Those who do not fit in are not the same as those who are unpopular, because those who are unpopular can have their own social niches.
